How Green is Airbnb?

How Green is Airbnb? - Guesty

Very green, according to a study conducted by Cleantech Group, which suggested that staying in an Airbnb host is a more efficient and environmentally friendly way to travel. Cleantech surveyed 8,000 guests and hosts, and compared their answers to research on hotel and residential sustainability practices. For both North America and Europe, the hotel data used represented around the top 5% most energy-efficient among them.

Check out the results:

Why do Airbnb rentals save so much energy? Well, part of it has to do with scaling. Even the most environmentally conscious hotels still have to deal with the unavoidable inefficiencies of centralized temperature control, sheet and towel washing, and bright, bright hallway lighting. But it’s not just that. The results show that Airbnb guests and hosts alike are on the whole more green-oriented than the average household or hotel guest. For example, 95% of North American Airbnb hosts said that they consistently recycle at least one item type in their household. Also, less than half of Airbnb hosts in both Europe and North America offer their guests disposable, hotel-like toiletries, which result in a lot of wasted plastic.

Clearly, the Airbnb community is an earth-friendly one, filled with waste-wary micro-entrepreneurs and young, millennial travelers, eager to reduce their carbon footprint en route. The report is one of the first of its kind, and we’re likely to see more encouraging studies in the future as researchers continue to analyze the ways in which the sharing economy is cutting down on waste and reducing inefficiencies in a myriad of markets.  Greening up the globe one Lyft car, one TaskRabbit errand, one Airbnb rental at a time.
